Work Package 2 - PreOS Management Services

The expected result from this work package is the design and development of PreOS management mechanisms suitable for broadband access networks. This workpackage comprises five modules:

Study on the viability of porting PXE to WiFi environments

In order to take advantage of previously developed work, this subtask corresponds to a study to assess the technical viability of PXE (Preboot eXecution Environment) outside the local network environments it was originally designed for. The idea is to use PXE (or an adapted version of the protocol, if necessary) to implement PreOS management mechanisms for graceful and transparent system recovery – remotely controlled by the service provider – in the case of failure or misconfiguration of the appliance. The interest on the use of PXE is related to its industry-standard status – guaranteeing widespread long-term support – and the existence of extensive previous work on its use for PreOS remote management.

Study on the viability of porting PXE to ADSL

This subtask is similar to the previous subtask, but in this case applied to the most common ADSL protocols.

Design of the PreOS Infrastructure

Taking into account the conclusions obtained from the two previous studies, further research will be conducted to conceive and specify a suitable set of procedures to incorporate into the automatic configuration, self-healing and update mechanisms, in order to build an adequate low-level management framework.

Development of PreOS Infrastructure

This subtask corresponds to the development of the previously conceived low-level management framework.

Validation Tests

After the low-level management framework has been implemented it will be submitted to a series of validation tests.
